Beschreibung: In 2002 the journal October devoted a special issue to the concept of obsolescence launching a broader discussion on the potential of the "outmoded" in contemporary art. Today, obsolescence is a relevant topic not only in artistic practices, but also in popular culture. This panel addresses the question why there is this interest today and how the obsolete can serve critical, even utopian purposes. Nina Jukić’s contribution The Future is Analogue – Retro Utopia and the Revival of Film Photography analyzes how the current resurrection of analogue photography in popular culture reflects utopian desires to resist the digital abundance of the modern world, yet relies on capitalism itself. The topic of Kristina Pia Hofer’s talk is Material (for) Utopia: Exploitation Cinema, Obsolete Technologies and Queer-Feminist Appropriation. Via the example of Herschel Gordon Lewis’ She-Devils on Wheels (1968), she argues that the appeal of Lewis’ crude, exploitation-feminist utopia to later queer/feminist engagement also has roots in the insistent presence of the obsolete technology that haunts the film. Gabriele Jutz focuses on Retrograde Technicity in the Historical Avant-Gardes, showing that the avant-garde’s attitude to the new technologies of audiovisual reproduction was retrograde, but necessarily so, given its radical aspirations.
